Shyamlal Yadav, is a member of the Investigative Bureau of The Indian Express and one of the pioneers of the effective use of RTI (Right to information) for investigative reporting. He is also a member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), Washington DC. His reporting on polluted rivers, foreign travel of public servants, MPs appointing their relatives as their assistants, and more has generated impact in India. Shyamlal is the only two-time winner of the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Investigative Reporting category. He has been awarded the Lorenzo Natalie Journalism Prize (European Commission, Brussels), Developing Asia Journalism Award (ADBI, Tokyo), ACJ Award for Investigative Reporting, National RTI Award, Statesman Rural Reporting Award among others. He has addressed conferences at a range of forums, including UNESCO, Columbia University, London University and European, Asian and Global investigative journalism conferences and some other conferences in Brazil, Ukraine, South Africa, South Korea, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal etc. He is in active journalism since 1993 and before joining The Indian Express in November 2011, he worked with India Today (weekly) and Amar Ujala (daily newspaper) as well.
He is the author of Journalism Through RTI: Information, Investigation, Impact (SAGE, 2017) which is now translated in Hindi and Marathi as well.
