English language skills for communication I highlights the significance of teaching communication skills to our students. This book has been designed to offer both the teacher and the student a new approach to teaching and learning communication skills. The book comprises three units–listening skills, speaking skills and reading skills. Though they are dealt with separately, the exercises and activities in each br>Unit complement each other. The section on listening skills highlights the importance of listening, factors that contribute to listening, barriers to effective listening and how they can be overcome. Exercises and activities are provided in the text to enhance listening skills. The section on speaking skills is divided into two parts. The first section deals with the sounds of the English language and the second section, comprising six units, lays emphasis on practice in listening and speaking. Each br>Unit contains listening passages followed by intensive speaking practice in the form of dialogues, role play and so on. Reading plays a vital role in strengthening the associated skills of listening and speaking. The section on reading skills highlights the methods and sub-skills needed to improve reading skills. Barriers to reading and ways to overcome them are also discussed.

NK Mohan Das, PhD has over three decades of experience and expertise in teaching language and literature. He has been involved in formulating curriculum and developing pedagogy for various courses. As a consultant and resource person, he has been associated with the World Bank, UNDP, DFID, IGNOU, NCERT, MHRD and CARE at various stages in his career. His current professional interests include e-learning, social media and Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) for education. R Gopakumar, PhD is Head of the Department of English, Gregorian College of Advanced Studies, Sreekaryam, Trivandrum. Formerly Head of the Post-Graduate Department of English, Mahatma Gandhi College, Trivandrum, he has 31 years of service in various colleges under Calicut University and University of Kerala. He is an Academic Counsellor to IGNOU and is a Permanent Faculty of the Kerala Institute of Labour and Employment (KILE), Trivandrum.
