My most recent book, Army Girls, was inspired by the 80th anniversary of WWII female conscription. To mark the occasion I worked with some of the very oldest women in Britain in the middle of a pandemic. It was a deeply moving project exploring war, class, sexism and patriotism with extraordinary individuals on the precipice of life.

I've been lucky enough to write three oral history books about the women who grew up in a 20th century scorched by war and defined by advancing technology and democratic progress. Equal it was not, but change has never happened so fast. The Century Girls and The Bletchley Girls also catch some of those extraordinary societal shifts and the women who lived them.

My first book was very different - To Romania with Love - is an experimental memoir about the country I have always felt a very deep connection with and that is where I will return for my fifth book - the proposal for which I am writing now! Watch this space - yes it has a royal theme and the protagonist is very much a woman at war....
