Randhir Sinh was born on 06 Apr 1947, in India. He underwent schooling at the Mayo College, Ajmer and followed the family tradition by joining the Indian Army in 1968. He served till 2005 and retired as a Major General. He has had a rich and varied experience in all the trouble spots, including the Siachen Glacier, and has been awarded with four gallantry/distinguished service awards. His son continues to serve in the same battalion of Gorkha Rifles which was raised by his father, a veteran of World War 2. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Defence Studies, London and a member of the Himalayan Club. He holds the Chattrapati Shivaji Chair of Excellence awarded by the United Services Institution of India.
